Russia has opened a new wheat export route to Kenya and has already exported a 44,000-tonne shipment from Vysotsk.
Since 2023 Russia’s market share of wheat in Kenya’s wheat imports has been estimated around 67%.
With Kenya being heavily dependent on imported wheat especially with domestic production barely meeting 20% of domestic demand. Wheat is a critical input for the country’s milling and baking industries.
In a world where global supply shocks and price volatility have become increasingly common, Russia had been seen as a dependable supplier of both grain and fertiliser to the Global South.
